Designed to sit anywhere and be easily deconstructed at end of life, or for storage. My gaming chair is a contemporary luxury product, equipped to deal with the variety of gaming positions. Using the existing test rig, to allow the chair to maintain balance at a 25° within a 360° orientation in the X/Z directions.
This project was targeted towards user experience. Using the proof of principle CAD moving seat rig, the main task, was to provide a more comfortable and suitable shell to house the rigs internals. Allowing for user adjustment for their preferred seating.
The first task was looking into different gaming systems that are suitable for the product. Looking into human factors, seating postures, and styles of gaming chair. This is then collated into a human factors board showing two directions I wish to explore. These being Comfort and Minimalistic.
Within the minimalistic direction, I was primarily looking at different open weave designs, and the materials and manufacturing necessary behind that. This was collated into two mood boards, ready for let out development.
The comfort direction was concerning both visual and physical comfort. The gaming environment can become quite energetic, so to reduce the acts of frustration a warm appearance was important. Looking at all types of leisure furniture, and the relevant materials and manufacturing practices to inspire my creative thinking.
Inspiring my minimalist and comfort-based design ideation, looking into weaves and simple yet intriguing structures. Using this to create my first concept. Designing for disassembly and user preference. Allowing the user to augment the chair angle for personal comfort.
Additionally, I created my second design, the comfort concept. Designing for leisure, so the product can be used in a family setting or in gaming situations. Using primarily wood to provide the structure. Using the warmer tones, to provide a warmer aesthetic.
These concepts where then presented, to the client, who liked aspects of both concepts, and wished for them to be combined to produce the warm aesthetic and communal styling of the second concept, with the disassembly aspects of the first concept, to provide good comfort, and angle adjustment.
This was then refined and finalized to complete my technical specification and CAD. Within the spec, I provided the parts list, production quantity, materials and manufacture decisions and considerations within my project. Surmising on the total cost, and the suitability of the product for the clients’ needs and wants.
